We arrived at the pow wow site around noon on Saturday.  Joseph set up and I supervised!

I won't go into much about the Indians/First Nations peoples because I know so very little.  I can tell you that in the area we were there are the Okanogan, the Thompson, and the Shuswap.  Originally there were only tribes, clans, and elders.  Bands and chiefs came about much later because of the government.

There were people at the pow wow from many places, not just the area we were in  - past Merritt.  It was a very small pow wow with only about 100 people.  It was traditional rather than competitive, which was great for me.  Everyone was together.  I was always within a foot or two of wherever I wanted to be/see, and sat with the participants not away from them.

On day one they had dancers in all categories and prizes.  Everyone was fed a salmon dinner.  We retired about midnight.
On day two there were special dances, prayer ceremonies,  birthday wishes, and some telling of their troubles and asking for prayers.  We were fed a hearty breakfast of eggs, bacon, sausage, ham, rice, bread and coffee.  For dinner there was a huge choice.  I chose salad, potato salad, spaghetti and moose meat  balls.  There always seemed to be cake.

The people were super nice, polite, clean, and gentle.  The children were so well behaved, it was remarkable.  Respect is a big thing and is taught and mentioned all the time.  Respect your grandparents, parents, etc.

The experience was so awesome, but I cannot put it into words.  It was spiritual and so very emotional.  I had tears running down my cheeks on two separate occasions.

I was welcomed by all.  My questions were always answered.

I feel so honoured to have been there (the only tourist), and I thank Joseph so very much.

Now a few photos ....
